Oh Gott, Zoll.
The Gods War vs Cthulhu WarsSome of our backers already own Cthulhu Wars. Naturally, they’d like to know the differences between The Gods War and the older game. First, you can ask anyone who's played both: The Gods War is not just a re-skin of Cthulhu Wars. It does share some elements – both are highly asymmetrical with unique units and player abilities, both have impressive large figures, and both boast an action phase that centers mostly around 1 action per player, paid for with Power.
But there are plenty of differences which contribute to an entirely new game experience. As an official playtester of both games once remarked, "Cthulhu Wars is like a knife fight in a back alley, and The Gods War is like a formal duel. On the surface they look similar, but they play totally differently.
But there are a lot of big differences too. I’ll just list a few:
The Chaos Rift Struggle is a game defining event in The Gods War that includes elements of a classic prisoners' dilemma (game theory). There is nothing like it in Cthulhu Wars.
Gods War has more flexible movement. One point lets you move ALL units in an area - imagine the tactical and strategic potential in Cthulhu Wars when everyone has Windwalker's Arctic Winds Spellbook...for free?!
Gods War has no cultists - there are literally zero shared units among any Empires in The Gods War. Every single unit is unique, without exception.
The expansions available (beyond new empires) work differently, than in Cthulhu Wars - the expansions for The Gods War add different types of elements, such as the Dragons and Monsters, for which there is no CW analog.
In Gods War, factions have a specific weakness as well as a bonus. This adds a lot of spice to your strategies.
None of The Gods War empires have any analogs to Cthulhu Wars Factions. Even if TGW were a re-skin of CW (which it's not), it would be like having 8 entirely new playable factions to try out! They are all radically different from each other, and all the Cthulhu Wars Factions.
This brief, incomplete list hopefully serves to highlight the radically different game play that The Gods War brings to the table, compared with Cthulhu Wars.

In addition, practically every element which does happen to reflect some part of Cthulhu Wars has an added twist in The Gods War. For instance, instead of Spellbooks, you're earning Gifts which are subdivided into meaningful sectors - the particular requirement you fulfill first matters. Instead of Gates, Gods War gas three types of buildings, each with special effects. Instead of Elder Signs, Gods War has Runes, which also provide useful bonuses, and on and on.

Then there are more subtle differences:
1) Atmosphere – the rules give a greater sense of the setting – there is heaven & hell, a great compromise, etc. The world map has a lot of personality, driving the nature of play in different ways.
2) Diplomacy – while Cthulhu Wars of course has plenty of interaction, Gods War is filled with even more opportunities to betray or cajole your rivals. These create some real memories of conflicts and interaction.
3) Power – It's gained completely differently from Cthulhu Wars. You are not working under the same considerations.
4) Council Phase – while this serves some functions of Cthulhu War’s Doom phase, it is more formal and structured, and incorporates game-changing cosmic events.
5) Buildings – unlike Cthulhu Wars' Gates, Buildings belong to particular empires and must be conquered in battle before ownership is transferred. Some buildings contribute to their own defense.
6) Rout after battle – unlike Cthulhu Wars, your opponent determines the area your units retreat to, and ALL your units go to the same area. This creates interesting considerations not present in Cthulhu Wars.
PS:
Sieht interesssant aus, CW ist genial, jedoch find ich wenig was mich überzeugt Glorantha zusätzlich zu Cthulhu Wars im Besitz haben zu wollen.
