WELCOME TO THE EXPANSE!The Expanse is designed for you to play out adventures and stories set in the solar system described in
The Expanse novels by James S.A. Corey—a future where humanity has spread out from Earth to settle Mars, the asteroid belt, and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Cold-war tensions have existed between the United Nations of Earth and the Martian Congres- sional Republic for some time, with both great powers surviving off the labor and resources of the Belters, the inhabitants of the Belt and the Outer Planets. The so-called Outer Planets Alliance has agitated for attention and justice from the Inner Planets, but to no avail. Now, the discovery of truly alien technology called “the protomolecule” has changed the balance of power. An unscrupulous corporation has allowed the protomolecule to consume thousands of inhabitants of the asteroid station Eros. Since Eros crashed onto the surface of Venus, the solar system has teetered on the brink of all-out war. What will arise from Venus’s swirling clouds once the protomolecule has done its work?
THE GANYMEDE INSURANCE JOBYou find yourselves packed into the dining room—if a total of two folding tables and four cracked plastic chairs can be called that—of a small lunch counter on Tycho Station, an hour before it opens. The place is clean and orderly in the typical Belter fashion, but shows signs of years of constant use. Variously seated or standing around the periphery are the Luongs, husbands Kofi and Hien, wives Thanh and Isabella, and their three young children. The oldest kid can’t be any more than eight, though she’d tower over any Earth or Martian kids her age. Nearly all of the family have recent injuries or just-barely-healed scars.
The adults take turns filling you in on their situation. The family lives on a rockhopper named the Tall Ship, where they make a living mining and making short cargo runs through the Belt. Their ship is badly damaged and in dock for repairs, but they’re running low on money and fear it may be repossessed to pay their debts. They explain that they have the ship insured, but that the insurer seems to have fallen off the grid. After three weeks of trying to reach him, they’ve turned to your crew in desperation, before they run out of money.
Hien hops off the counter, wincing as he puts too much weight on a foot in an inflatable cast. “Please,” he begs, “Creds wamali, yeah. Too few, milowda sasa. Milowda bist mal, tell truth. Help milowda, else finished we.”GANYMEDEGanymede Station is the bread basket and the main birthing center for the Outers and the Belt, one of the first permanent human toeholds in the outer planets, and a center of civilization in the far reaches of the solar system. It is the safest station in the Jovian system, where people come to give birth, avoiding the defects that can come with carrying to term in low or zero g. Until recently, the inner planets had shared Ganymede and most of the solar system like one big, happy, slightly dysfunctional family. Then came Eros. And Protogen. And Pheobe. After that, the two superpowers began to divide stations and moons between them like belongings after a divorce, and the one moon neither side was or is willing to give up to the other is Ganymede.
As the only moon with any magnetosphere, it’s the only place where dome-grown crops stand a chance in Jupiter’s harsh radiation belt, even with heavy shielding on the domes and habitats. Ganymede is also unique in its intricate system of orbital mirror stations that shine concentrated sunlight down onto the dome greenhouses that produce vegetables, fruits, and even some meat for those that can afford it in the Outers. The moon’s ice, on the surface and reaching into the depths of the moon, provides all the water necessary for life; human, plant, and animal. With wide hallways lush with plantlife, lit with full- spectrum LEDs that mimic the white-gold of sunlight, it is as close to living on Earth as one is likely to get in space.
Ganymede’s construction has continued over decades, with narrower, older first generation tunnels abandoned or disused as newer, wider, more attractive areas were built, with plants to supplement the oxygen production, better attractive to many families, and even during the worst of Martian-Earth hostilities post-protomolecule, violence on Ganymede was limited to a small revolt ending in sixteen dead. It could have been worse.
Ganymede’s security center is on the third level down from the surface, independently powered in case of emer- gencies. The hospital is a state-of-the-art facility with a massive maternity wing. Put simply, Ganymede was designed for safety and longevity.
