"I've sent my ELF PACK off to Chaosium.
I have completed my third pandemic book, ELF PACK for RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha. It came in at 137k words, which I think makes it my longest book since DESIGNERS & DRAGONS: THE '00s (the longest of the decade-focused Designers & Dragons books).
ELF PACK is divided into three parts, which I hope will be three booklets in a boxed set, though that will ultimately be up to Chaosium's decisions and the economics of production. But, their brand-new Starter Set is such a great-quality product, and I don't have a boxed set of my own, so fingers crossed.
The three books are:
I. Book of Aldryami: Creating & Playing Elves
II. Aldryami Lore: Elf Legends & History
III. Into the Woods: Elf Adventures
(If that looks familiar, it was drawn from the organization of Troll Pak.)
I also wrote a few handouts that could go in a box, including elf poetry in "triku" (treeku?) form.
This is my third take on Gloranthan elves, one of the previous ones published (for MRQ), one not (for HQ). I am quite confident that it's the best of the set. I was happy with my MRQ book, but it was written *very* quickly; while the unpublished HQ book was too big picture, making it more of a worldwide Guide than a gameable supplement. But this time, Jeff had defined a very gameable line for RQ:G, centered on Dragon Pass, so that ensured that my book would be very gameable too.
That also led me to writing my four goals for the book:
1. Depict an alien race
2. Create a fantastical sense of wonder
3. Make everything very playable
4. Make much of the material very local
I hope I met those goals, because if I did, this should be a terrific supplement.
I have *no* idea when this might actually see print. I'm aware that Chaosium has quite a bit on their plate already, but presuming they like my turnover, it'll go in their queue.
I've got plenty else on my plate too, including a new product that I've tentatively agreed to work on with another publisher in 2022 (besides my ongoing work on new Designers & Dragons books). But, as Elf Pack (hopefully) nears publication, I do hope to do more with the Aldryami, eventually including supplemental products for Jonstown Compendium if the stars align.
Of the books I've produced so far during the pandemic, this was the unexpected one. Chaosium and I came to a contract in January, and now in December we have a book. Woot."
